Aikido

“The art of peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined...a suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose than to realize your inner divinity and manifest your innate enlightenment.”

Morehei Ueshiba, O’Sensei, founder of Aikido.

swariwaza Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art, created by Morehei Ueshiba (1883-1969). He trained and mastered several martial arts, beginning early in his life, and was drawn to a deep spiritual development, as well. Aikido is a natural integration of his spiritual and martial training.

The practice of Aikido is done in the dojo on a training mat, as a martial art, but the training offers a personal development that applies to daily life. The spiraling and circular movement of the art brings the dynamic of an attack into resolution rather than requiring physical strength. While it is physically conditioning and often fun, it is also ideal for all ages and athletic abilities. Students report improved confidence, empathy, and awareness of their surroundings. The development of presence and union with another in the moment is an opportunity to understand the way you react within a dynamic situation and learn to interact in a relaxed and focused way under pressure.

“The purpose of training is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and polish the spirit.”

Morehei Ueshiba, O’Sensei, founder of Aikido.
